Just recently, I found out my company was going to go through an acquisition. Purely out of my own assumption of potential restructuring (nothing confirmed), I interviewed with a new company. That new company offered me a role barely exceeding my current salary and job responsibilities. However, they were extremely enthusiastic about my background and very excited about the potential to bring me onto their team. I verbally accepted the offer and told my boss about it. He was absolutely distraught that I was giving my notice and blamed himself for not paying enough attention to me, or my development over the last couple of years. I work in an extremely autonomous position and do not require a lot of oversight at all. I am one of the few people in the organization that has truly earned his trust (I am in a fairly high-level position and work directly for the president) so I am also partially to blame for not working on my own development more actively.
I should also mention that I have not been unhappy in my role, in fact, I really enjoy my job, my team, my boss, my company etc. and am well compensated. I have received 2 raises in the time I have been working here both of which were completely unprompted and given to me because I was doing an excellent job. Accepting this new offer honestly was just out of the pure assumption that something *might* change with the structure of our company. I realize I should have done more digging with my boss and just have had a conversation with him.
Back to the meeting where I stupidly gave my notice instead of just expressing my concerns. My boss countered immediately with not only a life-changing promotion, but a $50k pay increase. This is a job that someone else is doing currently, who completely supported my move into the role when our boss told him because he is currently wearing 3 hats. This piece of his job was going to be pulled from him anyway, and quite honestly, it makes the most sense for me to take it.
There are SO many articles out there saying "DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ACCEPT A COUNTER" so I must admit, I am having a mild anxiety attack about accepting the counter. I had a long conversation with my boss over coffee and expressed my concern about the advice I was perusing on the internet and he stated I have NO reason to feel guilty and that he understands how the job market is. I also told him that I did not want to be considered a flight risk if I took this new position. He also told me that even in the worst-case scenario, if the new owners decide to deprioritize my role, he will do everything in his power to ensure I stay in that role, even if it means a new title. He genuinely wanted me to stay and in addition to the promotion and huge salary bump is even planning to put me on a long-term incentive plan as a way to calm my nerves.
This to me feels like an exception to the rule and like he is really being genuine, but I just want to see what your thoughts are in this group.
Side note, another person at the director level just recently gave their notice in March and accepted a counter with our company. There is zero talk 6 months later of this person leaving or them potentially replacing this person. They also received a significant pay bump.
TL;DR - I like my job, boss, and company. I interviewed around because I thought my position might change due to an acquisition. I accepted an offer and gave my notice. Boss was incredibly upset (not mad) and offered me a $50k bump and significant promotion to stay. I discussed my concerns about having a target on my back and once eased, accepted the offer. Good or bad choice?
