Disclaimer: throwaway account. I also kind of showboat a bit in this post, which I feel a bit bad about. I think the information is relevant to my questions and should help, but I'm sorry if I come across cocky.
The Sitch':
I feel like I'm getting boned by my company. I have been working for a large consulting company as a new Cybersecurity Associate for about half a year now. I was a computer science student at a top school and wanted to go into security over traditional software development. But, as we know, it's challenging to break into security as a newcomer - so let preface this by saying I feel fortunate that I got this job out of college.
TLDR; happy I got the job, not so happy now.
The Background (disclaimer: some bragging):
However, I have come to realize (and please don't mistake this for me having a huge ego) that my skills seem to far exceed most other people I've met at my level at this company. When I started, I made some really cool demos and proofs-of-concept early on that allowed the firm to sell some more work. After that, I performed an excellent delivery all by myself (senior left mid-project) as an associate, which got some eyes on me. Throughout all of this, I've been talking to high-stake client point-of-contacts and can converse with them very well. This leads me to where I am now, which is running two workstreams - each of which should probably be managed independently by a senior associate. I'm literally now in charge of 4-6 people (most of which have been here longer than me - including a senior) and their day-to-day duties. Again, I'm performing super well in the role, to the point of me being pestered about doing even more work on top of this. So, in short, I'm doing the work of individuals above me (or more), with nothing to show for it but compliments. My performance on project-management duties + the technical skills I've worked super hard to build are leading me to be frustrated by my current package.
TLDR; exceeding expectations significantly, nothing to show for it except compliments.
The Future:
A couple of promises have floated down from those responsible for my career trajectory. Namely, that they will try and get me promoted by next year. I think the normal cycle is 3-yr promotion, and 2-yr is considered quick. So a 1.5-yr promotion would be awesome, but it involves me waiting until next summer. Also - very important to note that these are potentially empty promises that can just be shut down w/ red tape via firm policy. It seems like it's already not allowed, but they're going "try because I'm a special case." Of course, I'm a political moron, so I have no clue if this is just complete bullshit. Let me also mention that I really only care about the title since I don't think the compensation package will really improve to where I want it.
TLDR; expedited promotion promised, who knows if it's possible.
The Dilemma:
At the end of the day, my goal is to work in security at a FAANG-esque firm. I've worked very hard to try and maintain my technical skills and am always trying to learn new technologies. The initial plan was to finish up my MS program (Fall, 2022), get the senior title, and leave for a role that more suits my interests. However, I'm becoming increasingly dissatisfied with my compensation (inflation & the works) and find it borderline offensive that I'm being asked to put in more work on top of me performing senior associate+ roles. I want to try and ask my career advisors to do a half-year promotion (December), but I really am afraid they'll be pissed off since they're already trying their hardest to do it by next summer.
TLDR; I think I'm underpaid for what I do.
Specific Questions:
For Consultants:
- First off, someone who consults, can you give me a reality check? Are the roles I'm performing expected of an associate who joined six months ago? The comments I've received allude to no, but maybe people are trying to stroke my ego to keep me happy.
- Is the 1.5 yr promotion feasible? Or am I just being lured to disappointment? How strong is the red-tape in these large Big 4 firms?
- Would I be an asshole to ask about the 1-yr promotion instead? I feel like I have my ammunition (already doing the role), but I don't want to offend.
For Cybersecurity Folks:
- Due to a contract role I had with the company prior, I can stretch the dates I've worked at the company to about 1-yr. Is 1-yr of work experience enough to start branching out to other security technical roles? Everything seems to say 2yrs+, but sometimes those requirements aren't to be taken seriously.
- Do any recruiters/hiring managers out there have vision of the market as a whole? Looks like there's a lot of work out there, but last application cycle I did (March, 2021), I wasn't getting many bites.
- It's hard to ego-check me without any specific details given (sorry, trying not to identify myself), but if you think I'm overinflating my worth here, please let me know.
For Everyone Else:
- Is the experience I have now sufficient to job hop.
- What would you do if you were me?
- Is it okay to have that conversation with my career advisor? (trying to get promoted earlier than the expedited timeline) Do you think there are pitfalls to this? For example, I'll be marked as a flight risk, hurting the chances of the latter situation.
- It's hard to ego-check me without any specific details given (sorry, trying not to identify myself), but if you think I'm overinflating my worth here, please let me know.
