Hi all. I started a job working at a greenhouse about 6 weeks ago as a grower. I am a 25yo female. The growing manager (my boss) is a man in his 50s, I'll call him Joe. At first he came off as a very laidback, cool and friendly boss. But over time I've started to get some creepy vibes from him. First of all, he will on occasion touch the shoulders of female employees. I've never seen him do this with the men. It's just a brief tap. I know that this might be a generational thing, I've just never had a manager touch me before. Then there's the thing of him asking personal questions. On one of my first days there, we were discussing if i was able to work on Fourth of July. He said something like "I dont know if you need to coordinate plans with your... significant other?". The question was completely unexpected and unnecessary as I was about to tell him I could work the holiday. He had no real reason to bring that up. I told him no, that I didnt need to do that and that I could work the holiday. He will often do weird things like that, like inject a personal question into an unrelated conversation.
There was once where he was telling me and another female coworker about how he used to refer to the women in the warehouse as "girls" and one of them called him out for it, asking him to call them "women" or "ladies" etc. He was almost trying to get our opinion on it.
Another time he was showing me how to repair a hose. He was trying to explain the difference between male and female hose connectors/threads. I told him I understood the difference (it's pretty easy to figure out) but he proceeded to give me this super awkward, unnecessary explanation about how it's like sex. Like I'm pretty sure he said something along the lines of "the male one screws into the female one because a man enters a woman". I felt extremely uncomfortable and confused as to why he treated me like I needed a refresher in 5th grade sex ed and couldn't figure out the analogy myself.
The other day he called me on my cell in the middle of the work day. I was watering in one of the houses and I stopped to answer (we often communicate over phone at my job since it's a big place and people are always all over the place). He proceeded to ask me about the work physical I had gotten last week (I had to leave during the work day to get a medical clearance to wear a respirator when we spray pesticides). He specifically wanted to know what they do for the physical. Already weirded out, I told him it was mostly just checking heart and lungs. He asked "do they listen to your lungs?" I said yes.... He continues trying to get information from me about the physical for an uncomfortably long time. I ask why he wants to know. He said one of my coworkers was going to get his physical and wanted to know what it would entail. Which, even if that's true, why would he then call another employee to ask about that? Either my boss is just old and stupid or he's a total creep who keeps toeing this line of subtle harassment. I feel like I'm going crazy because I dont have one thing I can point solidly to and say "he's harassing me" but at the same time his behavior has made me feel uncomfortable whenever I'm around him.
Any perspective or advice on this behavior would be much appreciated. I'm at the point where I know I want to leave this job, I just don't know if I can hold out until I find a different job or if I want to just give my two weeks now.
