I asked my VP of Operations if he had any task he wanted me to complete by the end of December; He told me to look at my job description; Is this the usual procedure?
In October, I began working as an administrative assistant for a non-profit organization that recently rented out an office space and is starting to open up but is not fully operational.
Here are what my primary responsibilities:
- Operations
- Bookkeeping
- Marketing and communication
- Human resources etc
With that being said, I noticed that they had problems with communication from the very beginning, and hence we were based at home. I had trouble contacting them or have yet to receive a complete orientation, and overall, they would throw a task at me via email with no context and so forth.
Hence, I did my best to complete those tasks and made an effort to communicate and ensure I kept the communication going even though they seemed very apprehensive.
Fast forward, I'm told the President and Vice president of the organization are married. Still, he, the vice president, calls the shot, so he tells us to transition to the office on November 8 but bear in mind there are so many things missing in the office, and he is barely around as he works a full-time job and getting a hold of him is incredibly difficult.
So at the office, I assist with any task given to me as I have yet to receive a complete orientation, so two days ago, the president (wife) told me that she did not create my job posting. Hence, she has no idea what I would need to get done, so I should contact her husband who is leaving for his trip next week , so I do contact him. He begins by asking me what I'm working on and then says I should take more initiative more than waiting for them and look at my job posting and work from there.
Bear in mind the job posting has no details regarding their plans for the next few months or details regarding what they have already worked on and what they wish to work on for the next few weeks/months.
I have not met with any of their lawyers/accountants to discuss any work I can assist with regarding HR ( Contracts) or Bookkeeping.
I have furthermore not been given any tools to begin working on their social media accounts as he cannot remember his full password/username.
I'm trying to be patient, but the lack of communication is rather strange, and I felt pretty insulted that he would suggest I solely read my contract, which would be my work plan and felt agitated that I was even asking him about my work plan.
Anyhow, is this the usual procedure? At the moment I'm not wishing to renew my contract past March as they do not seem to have a sense of direction and this has been quite stressful.
