So I’ve been working as a manufacturing engineer at a small company that manufactures for aerospace and medical companies for a year now after graduation. A couple of my close friends have been working as manufacturing engineers at Sierra Nevada Corporation, and their team is hiring associate manufacturing engineers for their Dream Chaser project. I am definitely qualified and have a solid connection too, plus it’s a very cool job and would love to be a part of the team. However I have some history in my past that I am afraid would prevent me from getting a security clearance. This position is SECRET security clearance.
So my past: I have three things in my medical records. They are: “GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER”, “UNHEALTHY SUBSTANCE USE BEHAVIOR”, and “SEIZURE WITH PROVOKING FACTOR”. Basically, I was doing a lot of xans and coke, and I was hospitalized twice. First time was when my neighbor reported me because she was concerned, second time from a coke seizure. They also did a drug screening when I was in the ER, and tested positive for everything except meth and heroin (thc, benzos, coke, opiates). These events happened in early 2018.
Another one I’m concerned about is my medical marijuana card that I’ve had since 18-20. I don’t even remember what I got it for—I think headaches (I’m in Colorado)—and I literally got it on my 18th birthday. And then when I was 20, the whole incident happened, and then I was eligible for extended plant count, which upped my daily purchase amount—which also seems bad. And then when I turned 21, I stopped renewing my med card. I’ll be completely honest, I totally got that med card to buy legal weed. And anyone who would be doing my security clearance will obviously realize that my use for medical marijuana was complete bullshit. Especially since I stopped right when I turned 21.
I understand that a large portion of security clearance has to do with drug history, so I never really applied for positions that do require them. However, this is a great position that I am qualified for, so I’m asking if there is an even slight chance to be cleared, especially since this is a secret level clearance. I’ve heard of people getting disqualified from DUI, and what I’ve done is way worse imo.
I do want to mention that I have attended two therapy sessions after my incidents, and hard drugs were completely stopped afterwards. I also got my certification in personal training (and CPR certified) this year. Idk how much that will be to show them I’ve changed tho.
Also I have dual citizenship. Korean parents, but born in the states. Sorry I have a lot going on, and I do expect the answers will say that it will be very hard for me to get cleared, but I also wanted to know what I can do to show them that I’ve changed and my bad history will not reflect who I am now, or how much longer I should wait out until considering security clearance jobs. Thanks in advance.
