Unless relevant to the job, should I omit the fact that I have a PhD?

I'm an ex-tenure track professor, and I've left academia. I'm applying for jobs left and right, and I passively come across the idea that having a PhD is seen as a detriment. Some people have had better prospects of getting a job after removing it from their resume, entirely. Yet and still, I see some other people who say that if I simply sell myself with my worthy credentials and use the PhD as an asset, it isn't a problem.

What is going on here? Do I omit the PhD, if its not relevant to the position or not?

Thanks in advance...
