Context: my field of work is in graphic design, illustration, and company branding. So Creative Art + Business. I'm not writing this out as "Tips to get good job prospects" because it might not always apply in some cases. And ofc, it's just my experience.
All four jobs pay very well compared to the numerous jobs offered in my country. Three are international, one was local. I'm keeping it vague for anonymity sake.
So what did I do to get these really good job offers?
- Spec work/projects. A lot of the time, the company was impressed by my dedication to doing self-made projects or spec work that's related to my field. Like building a website for a fake company, then detailing what my process was.
- Showcasing experience/methodology. I have a website with a page dedicated to collaborations, I wrote out my experience with a YouTuber I worked with and what I did for them. This helped get me a job offer working with a similar YouTube channel that paid significantly more.
- Referrals. My latest job offer is contractual, the person knows me personally and from what they heard from me from other clients - they thought i would be a good fit for the project.
I hope this helps any graphic designers/illustrators around who might be struggling.
Advice: if a company asks you to do designs for them and they haven't hired you yet, then DON'T DO IT. What I did was ask if i could get compensated with a minimum wage or put a watermark on my work.
