How do you reach out to recruiters?

I know a lot of in house recruiters (I’ve met and got their info from college career fairs) and I heard that I can reach out to them and ask them to talk to the hiring manager on my behalf? Something like that, just to get the HM to take an extra look at my application. I just feel awkward asking for it because it sounds like I’m asking for special treatment. Has anyone done this? What’s the best way to phrase this request?
