Does my boss want me to leave?

Hi everyone. I’ve had my job for over a year now, and I have to admit that it’s been a pretty tough time. Not just for me, basically for all of my colleagues as well due to Covid and the company’s legal status transition. There have been loads of sudden and totally unexpected changes at the company, and we’ve had to quickly adapt to them all, which has changed the specific of our jobs.

What I want to talk about is my boss, precisely the way he perceives me. At work no one really likes him because the way he talks to others and handles things depends entirely on his mood. He’s also a little bit paranoid, but I’ve never paid much attention to that to be honest.

I get along really well with my teammates and almost everyone else at work, and each collaboration brings outstanding results. Everyone’s always satisfied with all my work, whether it’s a collaboration or something I’ve done on my own. Occasionally there can be suggestions and minor corrections, which is totally fine. My boss, however, often seems unsatisfied with what I do and desperately tries to find something to criticise, even if everybody else says I’ve done my job perfectly. He’s always worried about what others would think/say, and even if people’s feedback is positive, he still thinks there might be someone who would leave negative feedback.

I’ve worked on several very successful projects completely on my own, but every time we discuss the outcome, he praises the whole team (without saying any names). If all of us work on a certain thing, he thanks everyone except me most of the time.

3 months ago we switched to the hybrid model (had been working remotely for a while) — 2 days in the office and 3 at home. I always get to work in time and leave in time as well, although sometimes I leave later than usual. He keeps asking me why I always leave on time whilst others stay until late evening. Well, if I complete all the tasks long before the deadline and do my job well, then why should I stay at work until late? I’ve got a bunch of other commitments and loads of things to do. I’ve never received any criticism from my teammates or anybody else.

Also, he’s been micromanaging us, especially me. Again, I don’t know why. He once told me he wasn’t satisfied with the clothes I wear at work. He believes that everyone should look simple rather than wear luxury clothing. If I like it, why not? I just don’t get it. I care about the way I look and I always want to look good, is there anything bad about it? A couple of months after I was hired, he found my accounts on social and followed me everywhere. He’s been regularly viewing all of my content ever since. I’ve heard him talk to others about my posts and stories several times. This is ok as I don’t really care what he thinks. I don’t post inappropriate content, and all of my pics, videos, stories, text posts and comments are not inappropriate at all.

A bit less than a month ago I decided to resign in order to focus more on my studies (currently doing a Master’s Degree) and told him about that. He didn’t seem sad at all. He told me he was happy for me, wished me all the best and immediately changed his attitude towards me. He’s been super friendly, kind and generally very nice to me since that moment. I’ve stopped caring about my performance, and if I fail a task or even a project, I won’t be worried about it because I’m leaving. It doesn’t seem to bother him at all.

Today my company’s HR manager asked me if I’d like to work part time in a different department. I know the department and people who work there quite well, and the HR told me a little more about salary and conditions. I decided to accept the offer. I told my boss about it and could see the hate in his face, although he tried to keep it all in. Things instantly got back to what they were a month ago, and now he seems to hate me, even though I’m leaving his department.

Do you think he wanted me to leave right from the beginning? If yes, why hire me? I also can’t understand why he hates me. I can’t recall having done something wrong or violated the rules. I get along well with everyone except him, so I find it pretty strange overall.
