My title is maybe not entirely accurate so sorry for the clickbait.
So, like many people, I was laid off due to covid and found myself underemployed when I reentered the workforce (which for me, was in November). I have been completely underleveraged at my current job and so I just accepted a new one. The salary is double what I make now and it's a great opportunity in general, so I'm happy with it. I've sent my signed offer letter and background check authorization and received several emails acknowledging my addition to the team. It's been a week since submitting these though, and the background check is *still* processing. I'm not sure if this seems like a long time but considering the nature of some of their work, it would make sense for it to be thorough, and I do have a few items in my history which might extend processing time.
This would not be a problem if my start date were not June 1st. I'm getting antsy because I have not resigned yet because I wanted the results of the background check first. At this point though, I am tempted to give my boss notice on Monday, as I don't want to be even more abrupt. I feel pretty disappointed in myself for knowing I'm going to have to leave with less than 2 weeks courtesy notice and I'd like to give as much notice as possible. I am not so concerned about failing the background check, but I am just not entirely comfortable resigning before knowing for sure either.
To add to the context, I am also transitioning into a recent promotion at work (or so they plan), so prematurely resigning would be all the more bitter should my offer fall through. But I almost don't care because I also have the buffer of a final round interview for an even higher level position with another great firm scheduled for 2 days after my tentative start date. I will of course have to notify that firm about my employment status soon, too.
Thoughts? Does it seem I have enough to go on to commit to resigning Monday or does the practicality of holding off weigh more? I'd also love to hear about similar experiences.
tl;dr: Once upon a time I had a low paying job during covid which could be a slightly better job due to promotion but never mind because I accepted a great job but uh oh where paperwork at idk so I'm not telling anyone rip boss and maybe other better job anyway if all hell breaks loose so all good maybe.
