Graduating with a master’s degree... I want to change career fields entirely. Time to market my skills...
I’m a few weeks away from earning a Master of Education and reading specialist certification and I already have a Bachelor of Science in Education. When I finally leave my campus, I’ll have two degrees and three certifications (all summa cum laude) and a few random awards. However... I realized this year (probably alongside the changes with the pandemic) that I want something different than a career as a teacher. I am not opposed to applying to teaching positions if needed. I know I’m qualified. However, I have a growing passion for communications and marketing.
As a child, I was always drawing & designing advertisements, ‘teaching’ my siblings as we played school, designing websites on WordPress and blogging. I always ended up deleting the work I created out of embarrassment. Furthermore, my parents always directed me towards being an educator. My mom never went to college (neither did my dad) and I think her wish for me is to be a teacher. My parents are very religious and my mom said she believes her ‘mission’ is to serve the students in my classroom. But... I don’t want it.
Now, I’ve applied to 10+ (more to come) positions in the marketing and communications field. I’m looking into being a content writer, editor, or anything related to curriculum specialist if I lean towards education again. I’m a fast learner and I also love learning. I have gained so many valuable skills in education. I love writing, editing, and content creation. I guess it’s time to market my skills and advertise myself as all the things I just shared above. If anyone has been here or has any recommendations for someone in my position... I’ll take it! Am I qualified to jump fields & look into marketing?
I feel like at least half if not more of teaching and lesson planning is marketing to your intended audience and keeping them engaged long enough to make a connection. I’m confident in myself, I just need some motivation to keep following this new dream.
