Would Quitting My Maintenance Job be a Mistake?

So, I was one of those people who graduated college into a pandemic. I majored in English and Media Studies, so my prospects of having a job straight out of college were already zilch.

After spending the summer of 2020 unemployed, I finally got a job with the school system doing maintenance work fixing toilets and changing light bulbs and handling random facility issues. The labor is decent. Some days I come home exhausted and some days I feel bored. The pay is pretty okay. It’s $15.50/hour for 40-hours a week. I make plenty money. Enough that half my paycheck goes into savings each month. I live with roommates and live pretty modestly.

The problem is that I absolutely hate it. Every day I wake up at 5AM. This means I’m usually in bed by 9PM, living on a different sleep schedule than all my friends and loved ones. I essentially don’t get to see or talk to them because I’m asleep while they’re awake and awake while they’re asleep. It’s been hard to deal with. I strongly dislike everyone I work with, being the youngest there by a few decades. They’re not bad people (mostly) but they’re not the kind of people I want to spend my time with.

It’s an extremely emotionally exhausting job and I’ve been doing it for 6 months.

The saving grace has been communicating with teachers. I absolutely love talking to the teachers every day. So much so that I’ve decided to go into teaching myself.

Here’s my plan:

I have enough money in the bank right now that I could be unemployed for five months and be fine. In that time, I would quit my current job in maintenance for a job in retail (I already have both my vaccine doses) making slightly less money and with fewer hours. The idea would be to just supplement my savings long enough. In the mean time, I would go back on my job search to keep applying for any job remotely in my field (editing, technical writing, copyediting, data entry, communication.) I assume this part of the plan won’t yield much success, so I’m also intending to go to grad school in the fall. I should know if I’ve gotten in by July. If that doesn’t work out, I can enroll in a teaching license-ship program and teach high school English, something that I know would be fulfilling.

I know it’s a huge risk but I really feel myself losing my mind at this job.
