What's the typical length of time following the final interview for a job offer?

Hey everyone, I am about to graduate college and have been job searching.

I interviewed with a company I'm really excited about for the first time about 2 weeks ago. I applied online, heard back from the recruiter quickly, and then was rapidly moved through four interview rounds that week. At the end of the final interview with the CEO, he told me that the person who would be my manager (interviews 2 and 3) told him that she really wants to hire me, and that as long as my references check out he doesn't see any reason why they don't "move forward". I was told that they're very busy, but that I'll likely hear back within the week.

It's been over a week since that last interview, so I finally reached out to the recruiter who responded that he is still in the process of checking my references and that I should hear back soon (with a smiley face)!

So... everything sounds good, I know they like me, and I know I shouldn't be impatient but I can't help but wonder why it would take so much time to check references (especially considering the initial speed in interviews). Does it sound like they're still unsure and are interviewing other candidates? How long is typical following the final interview to receive an offer? I've been sitting by my phone all week -- this is my dream job.
