References in application?

This is actually more of a rant than a question. While applying for a job for the millionth time, this particular application wanted me to provide references. Why would an employer, who hasn’t even offered me an interview yet, and most likely will not, need the personal information of someone else so soon? If I had a foot in the door, yeah sure, but it’s unnecessary and annoying, especially as such details don’t just get wiped away when you get rejected. I guess I’m just sick of going through these long drawn out application processes, having to unnecessarily provide more information.
