Position opened up at my work in the role I’d originally wanted...but with lots of caveats (post details). Closes for application tomorrow night. Would you apply?

After grad school I always wanted to do profession A in my specific field. It’s a really rough field to just get an entry point into, so I turned down a bunch of better opportunities to take a pretty low-level one (profession B) in the field...give it a real shot. After working my tail off, volunteering for a ton of extra projects, and really sacrificing a lot over this past year during the pandemic, my boss/department has made it clear that they’re about to offer me a huge bump in pay (comparable to all those other offers I already turned down, but that’s all I ever wanted/needed anyhow) and a slightly better role (B+?). And I really like my boss and the people on my team anyhow.

However, a Profession A role JUST opened up within the organization (different department).

To make things even more complicated, the role reports directly to one of the few people I’ve ever worked with who I don’t get along with. Partly because she’s a pretty difficult person and I was constantly frustrated with her since starting here...partly because I made the most boneheaded mistake of my career last year and mistakenly attached part of my “notes-to-self” wherein I referred to her as a semi-demeaning nickname...directly to a doc I emailed to her. We talked it out and have worked with each other a ton since then, but the idea of working for her now (if she’d even consider hiring me) is pretty worrisome.

So. Do I:

• apply for the job that I really really want even though the hiring decision is made by someone who actively dislikes me, and even though I’d have to work for someone who actively dislikes me, and even though I’d potentially put at risk the solid path I HAVE been able to set up in my current role?

OR

• give up on the role I originally really wanted. Accept the sure thing with the great team?
