A tale of hope for job seekers

In what now seems like another lifetime, I was working in business to business sales in a small local branch office of an international Fortune 100 company. It was just me as the Branch Manager with 2 sales reps. I used the local Kinko’s around the corner to get all my presentations and proposals printed/bound. I was there a lot and most of my jobs were handled by “M”. She was great with customer service, everything was ready on time (even those with an impossible turnaround time) and did a great job keeping multiple customer pieces separate within a single order.

Fast forward a couple of years and I am now working at a different company doing totally different work (Operations) I had this open spot on my team. It was an analyst position that was responsible for keeping a million different documents with a million different versions all organized and current. My HR recruiter kept on coming up empty. I was tired of doing my actual job and the analyst responsibilities at the same time. So one morning I just said, I need to find someone myself. I am pretty sure that one of the first people I thought of was “M”. I was also so desperate that I talked myself into believing that a cashier at Kinko’s was the perfect candidate for an analyst position with a Financial Services firm with a gazillion dollars under management.

After I decided she was perfect for the job, I called, asked for her at Kinko’s and she was actually still there. When she got on the phone, I just said “I don’t know if you remember me but I have a job I want to talk to you about….” She did remember and said let's talk. She took to the job like a duck to water. That job I gave her provided the spark she needed to finish school and start her career dream path in IT. She moved to IT with the company we were with then subsequently made two big jumps to other companies. She did it on the strength of her work but I like to think those letters of recommendations I wrote certainly helped.

So fast forward to now, over 20 year later, M is an IT Director for a major Global Brand. It’s a US company but she’s based over in Europe having the time of her life. (She is helping me plan a 5 week European adventure I want to take next year)

So a lesson for those job seekers out there on the front lines in what seems like a dead end job. Do the best you can every day. Someone will notice and sometimes that could lead to your dream career coming true.
