Live in better town with longer commute to work and higher rent, or live where I work with lower rent but nothing to do?
I just got offered my dream job... but it’s in a town in the middle of nowhere. The town even has a bad reputation for always smelling like cow shit too (if you live in Colorado, you know where I’m talking about!)
Just about 30-40 minutes away is my old college town which I deeply love. It has more nightlife, lots of my old friends from college still happen to live there, there are way more activities that align with my personal interests (hiking, biking, skiing closer by, etc). It also aligns with my political beliefs much better.
This all being said, I am in my 20s with no commitments (other than a dog who’s perfectly content as long as he’s by my side), but I also want to prioritize a balance between work and my personal interests.
Should I live in a town that better suits my interests, but also has a 30-40 minute commute one way. Or, should I live close to my job so the commute is minimal (and rent is cheaper as well)?
I’ve worked a job previously where the commute was over an hour one way and I was miserable. But I’m open to the idea of commuting (especially if it is half the length I’m used to) if it is better for my mental well-being.
