Flat-panel displays are made up of hundreds of thousands and sometimes millions of pixels. Given the number, it is not uncommon for manufacturing defects to occur in some pixels.

International standards set guidance for different ‘classes’ of display, based on a maximum number of defective pixels.

Pixel faults are classified as:

• permanently off

• permanently on

• a sub-pixel permanently stuck on one colour

Depending on the ‘class’ of display, a certain number of faulty pixels are allowed per million.

Four classes of display are defined. These start with Class I displays that have no faulty pixels of any kind, up to Class IV displays that have up to 700. In practice, most manufacturers specify that their products meet Class II standards. Production of Class I displays is costly, and they are usually only used in specialist areas such as medicine.

-Is the following statement true, false or indeterminable?: There is no absolute number of faulty pixels defined in the international standards.
