Is working for Instacart worth it?

I've heard and read things about working for Instacart, so I was wondering if anyone could share their experience/insight? Some contractors say it's great. But is it really worth it, because you have to pay for gas, car maintenance, and provide your own phone. I have read that you only get paid if you shop orders, so there is no base pay. I am desperate for a job, so should I consider working for Instacart?
