Context - I am in marketing/advertising sales for a professional sports organization. I am content in my role but had a mutual friend reach out with an opportunity that could be a nice step up for me. My "territory" currently is very local and this new position would allow me to call on national level prospects and potentially earn a lot more money for my work.
I had a very pleasant conversation with the hiring manager and things were very normal until he asked me about my "rolodex", essentially which brands and potential prospects could I bring with me to this new role.
Our industry is very incestuous and these brand relationships do matter, so I understand the question but to me it just seemed a little forward for a first conversation? I was put on the spot and could quickly think up a few examples but was kind of at a loss for words.
Is this a red flag or am I overthinking it? I feel like if this companies processes and products are solid, why would they be worried about who someone new brings to the table? Shouldn't my relevant experience and intangible qualities be what they want to know about?
