Internal Transfer...do I go for it???

I’ve been at the company I’m at now for almost 10 years. About a year ago I left the position I was in, on a team I loved, to get more leadership experience. I had been doing the same job for about 5 years and couldn’t climb any higher unless someone in management left. I didn’t want to wait for that to happen (and blink and all of a sudden it’s been 10 more years) so I applied for other management jobs. I was given an opportunity to manage a different department at the same company.

I just found out my previous manager is stepping down from their role to a non-managerial position and thinks I would be a good fit to step into the management role of the team I used to be on.

Is there an amount of time where it’s too soon to apply to a new job within the company? I love my current team, my manager & my co-managers. I feel really supported and don’t want to disappoint anyone, but I’m really interested in applying for the opportunity to manage the team in a department I’m “passionate” about. I just don’t want to burn bridges or screw my team over. How should I start the conversation with my boss that I’m interested in applying?
