So, my current situation is that I've applied for several hundred jobs during the past few months. While I've had a few interviews, I'm still very much unemployed. Financially, things are starting to get tight, and I need pretty much any job I can get as soon as possible.
Today, I sent an application into Spencer's, which is a retail chain. I immediately got a call back and have an interview set up for next week, which was a huge relief. Unfortunately for me, nothing seems to go right, and they want not just one, but two references... And specifically from people who have worked above me.
I graduated with an accounting degree in December, but I delete that from my resume whenever I apply for retail positions. I have one good reference, and it was from a 1 year job placement through my college. That's the one reference I gave. Aside from that, the last job I held during my studies was at another retail outlet, in which all stores were shut down last March. So... there is no reference I can provide there. And before I enrolled in college, I worked as a construction estimator. I was there for 5 years. But, during the last 8 months I was there, there was a change to my employment contract. The intent was to double my income, but my boss interpreted the new agreement as he just didn't have to pay me at all - and so he didn't. Eventually, I just walked out the door, took him through labor standards to get my money, and now I can't use that job as a reference.
I'm at a loss of what to do. I need to show up with 2 references, but obviously, I only have one, and I need a job as soon as possible. I'm thinking maybe the most reasonable thing is to just simply explain that I'm unable to get a reference for the last job I worked at because the location just doesn't exist anymore. But, with the way things have been going, it feels like doing that would just be shooting myself in the foot. Please advise.
