Aspiring tech journalist here; what’s some good advice for interviewing for a company when you’re worried that you just barely miss the mark for their ideal candidate?
Hi friends, I’m an aspiring tech journalist and I finally scored an internship interview at a tech publication! I’m kind of freaking out because I reeeeally want to get an offer from them, but here’s the problem: tech is such a broad beat for journalism, and this publication’s focus is more on startups/Silicon Valley type stuff. My passions in tech are more related to the Internet, social media, and the ways tech, entertainment, and/or culture intersect.
Keep in mind that this publication DOES do stories on all of those things, but I’m paranoid that my lack of expertise when it comes to other aspects of tech, particularly the aspects that are outlined in their mission as a publication, will make me a less worthy candidate. What are some things I can do to show them that a) I am very enthusiastic about tech journalism, b) I will be an asset when it comes to the stuff that I currently know a lot about, and c) I am eager to broaden my horizons and learn more about tech by working for them?
And I guess a big question I have is — should I put a lot of pressure on myself to learn more about startups before the interview (I’m still going to, just wanna know how important that will be) or should I really focus on highlighting the strengths that I do have?
