So, i got a new job at a local place near me. It pays pretty good for a basic job in my area (really good actually) and i'm a bit worried my job is firing someone to replace me.
It's a car wash but pays 13 an hour, the average pay for a job like that in my area is........10. The general manager at my location the first week or so was SUPER nice with me and cool. We had an inspection coming up the second week i worked there by literally the CEO of the company which happens maybe once every few years. The day that happened i worked. We had a higher up training manager stop by our location and he said to my boss before the CEO got there that the pants i was wearing were not "in code".
But, they were. The dress-code states "black pants, not jeans." and most of the employees wear that like.. gulf style pants. Sorta like slacks but a bit more fitted and breathable. I was wearing black pants that like... teens wear. But NOT JEANS. For reference, the tag on them says "pants" and they were from RUE21 and exclusively tagged under pants and NOT the jeans section.
This is similar to what they were, but black- https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=488420042&vid=2&tid=brpl000011&kwid=1&ap=7&gclid=Cj0KCQjwutaCBhDfARIsAJHWnHsQFNOt8KkdI3uzZZic5zd-Hi-TTSZBGVsziufVj48jg0-EnJqB4kgaAtPyEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#pdp-page-content
Now, my general manager who hired me comes up to me and says "hey you gotta go, just leave for like the next hour and then they'll be gone and you can come back. you cant be wearing jeans. " and i was like " ok yeah i can no problem, but these aren't jeans." Now mind you, i said this when he was super stressed and worried and he didn't like that. He responded fairly quickly " yeah. they are." (they aren't. They're just not baggy pants like old dudes like the training guy wear..) And was like "just leave for like an hour."
So i did. Anyways, part of our job is to sell subscriptions to the car wash. Honestly, they're not a bad deal. I currently have one of the higher numbers, especially for someone new and who has been training a lot. So i'm doing good. But, i heard my boss kinda like whispering when i came into the room he was in asking someone to call him back. Then when i came back into that room i saw him talking to another employee about resumes and stuff like that.
Also, it was super cold a couple days ago and i had asked him for a beanie and jacket from the company. These are pretty nice by the way, and he said he didn't have a beanie. Well, there's a supply closet with company clothes and extras..... there was a beanie by the way. And my coworker said he could just order me a jacket.
I'm planning on asking him if it's cold again" hey i had to grab X thing in the supply closet and noticed an extra beanie in there. Since it's kinda cold i can just keep this one right?" (these aren't current employees items so don't say that) as sort of a test to see if he'll let me have it. If he says "its not gunna be cold for that long or right now" then i'll say "yeah but, won't i need it anyways? might as well just take it now."
So the fact that he's unwilling to give me some of the more expensive clothes for the company and hiring new people makes me think he might be firing me. I'm in florida, and it's a right to work state. And i also know companies typically hire someone else before firing someone ( this exact thing has happened to me before.)
So, what do you think? Do you think my strategy about the clothes could be right or worth it? The thing that i'm confused on is i'm doing a good job selling subscriptions so it doesn't make a lot of sense to necessarily fire me (sometimes even better then their other employees currently there)
