I just did an informational interview with someone that works for a competitor to my company. Did I do something wrong?
I just spoke with someone who used to work at my company and now works for sort of a rival. We do business with them, but they’re definitely a competitor in a lot of ways. I just started at my company a few months ago and he is a senior level executive, so I thought it would be good to chat.
We talked over Zoom for about half an hour, I learned a bit about his trajectory and what the company he works at is up to. I wasn’t looking for a job there or anything, just wanted to network and get some insight about the industry as a whole from a major player.
He mentioned knowing my boss and being decent friends with him. I didn’t tell my boss or anyone I was going to chat with him. Not hiding it or anything, just never came up in conversation.
But I’m a little worried that what I did was inappropriate in some way. I work in media/entertainment and it’s extremely common to network, but did I do something wrong?
I’m a little worried that if he tells my boss, he might get suspicious or something of me.
