I was laid off from my job in June 2020 due to the pandemic. Finally in December, they called me asking if I wanted to come back. Thinking I could take advantage of the situation, I said I wanted to come back, but was currently working at a job that paid a higher salary. Instead of giving a counteroffer, the hiring manager said he was happy I'm doing well and that it sounds like I should stay at that position. They quickly hired a new guy. The whole thing left me feeling extremely embarrassed.
Cut to now, I've been doing multiple rounds of interviews for a new job over the past 3 weeks. It finally looks like I'm going to get an offer! However, in my first interview (which was with a HR rep), she told me the salary budget is $58k. Thats a great pay, but its so close to $60k that it seems like a wasted opportunity to not try to negotiate. I told her thats fine during the interview, but I'm planning to negotiate once its in-writing on my contract. I have years of prior experience, and I have skills that would be helpful to them. However I'm scared they'll walk, just like my last attempt, and I don't want to lose this opportunity. How should I go about this? Was thinking of saying $62k, but maybe I should just start at the number I really want (60k)?
I was given a template by a friend for how to formally counter-offer when presented with a job offer, so I know what I should write. But I'm not sure how smart it is to try this, especially during a pandemic.
