I never had retail experience growing up. I always worked fast food in High School. In college I didn't work and screwed around. No internships either. I have a degree in IT, and eventually got seven years of experience after being fired from a number of roles and positions in IT. Those were jobs I thought I could do, but couldn't hack it in the industry. I lost my passion for fixing computers altogether and I knew I wasn't ever going to pass those tests.
Last year I decided to try a different route in sales. I knew I was always good at talking with people and got super depressed when colleagues felt they were better than the 'IT guy.' So I tried my luck at Best Buy for a year and the numbers proved it. I was great at sales! One month I sold more Geek Squad Memberships than the entire Geek Squad Team. The lockdown taught me how to be a better salesman and save the sale. In October I joined an online ecommerce site and I'm doing $100K in sales a month with technology I barely know how to operate.
With this experience I'm searching for a part time job on the weekends and I'm shocked I'm getting more offers than ever before. I must have applied to 1000s of IT jobs in the past five years and got nowhere.
I know people look down on retail, they don't want to deal with the Karen's and the customers think they deserve special treatment in the middle of a pandemic, but it worked for me. Would I recommend this route to everyone? No, only unless you are absolutely sure you know where you want to be in life, and are ok with taking a step back for a risk. Retail could very well lead nowhere as it does to so many, but it helped my resume out tremendously.
