Waiting on a rejection email

The director called me last week and said I was one of the two finalist. After a few questions, he made it sound like I would not get the position. Do y’all ever wait on a rejection email? Like I know it’s coming but I still want to see it in writing. I have 10% hope that maybe there’s a slight possibility that I’ll be extended an offer.
