Fired from Dairy Queen

So I got fired from my job a while back and it’s time to look for w new job. I was just wondering are jobs that I’m applying to able to contact the store that I worked at ? Or are they only able to contact the references I provide ? Just worried they will contact someone who doesn’t have anything nice to say about me
