Bad reference

I have applied at many jobs in the oast 2 weeks but none of them have gotten back to me. i suspect that my previous employer is givng them back references. The manager is a drunk who has passed out on the bathroom floor and my previous coworkers used to do drugs in the back. I didnt like this so i called out of work once a week a week ahead. i would only get two 6 hours shifts as a host though so this made me get almost no hours. Should i stop putting them as references kn job applications and if i do wont future employers find out and call them?
