So I’ve been working for this company for a little more than a year and all was going well until recently. We go through constant team changes and I recently got paired up with a newer manager and some new teammates. This manager kinda has a reputation for being very blunt and to be the point. I didn’t think too much of it at first and it was fine for a little bit but it has gotten out of hand recently. I logged in and checked if something on one of our files to a vendor looked correct after I processed it. I checked and that particular thing wasn’t there. I told my manager about this and they told me to do a check if any others were impacted and to give the report mid-day. I pulled a report after an hour and they were like “you know what I’ll just do it.” And then I got berated by them for taking an hour to get the results but this was because I was multi-tasking on my other deliverables and I still met my manager’s expectation of giving it mid-day. Later in the day, I realized this was a non-issue and that manager again berated me for making them spend an hour doing a check on something that was a non-issue. Isn’t this gaslighting? They said they will do it, and I’m being yelled at for something they decided to do?
Another incident happened with one of my teammates. This particular teammate is a little more senior level and was coaching me and a few others on an alternate process. I did take notes during this meeting. This teammate at the end of the meeting said if you have questions as you are doing this, let me know and we can do the first one together. As I was conducting the process on my own I completed most of the steps but was confused on one particular step so I messaged them. This teammate ghosted me and threw shade during a meeting accusing us that we didn’t take notes when she was going through the process. And didn’t they say that they would be willing to do the first one together? This new manager I have been working with called me out on this also accusing me that I wasn’t taking notes when I was and I was literally just asking this teammate a question on a particular step. I tried to explain myself but this was all dismissed. Isn’t this also gaslighting? And also, it hasn’t been uncommon for me to get ghosted by my new teammates when I asked a question. I do try to do my own research before asking and I do explain what I did and then see if I could get assistance further.
There’s also been a few tickets we have to resolve with a customer and I accidentally misread one ticket and asked the vendor the wrong question. The vendor was confused by my question and told my manager (this vendor is extremely abrasive). My manager absolutely blasted me for this saying “if you’d bothered to look in the system, you would see that you didn’t have to ask the vendor that question.” I have managed hundreds of tickets at this point, and I got berated for a mistake I made on this one ticket and then this manager insulted my comprehension and problem solving.
I know I’m not alone with having problems with this manager because a fellow teammate said they worked with them on another team and it wasn’t fun. This manager was just a bit too much. And my fellow teammate has also messaged me multiple times complaining about this manager because of the nit picking and rudeness.
To be fair, we do have a hard project, and I believe that some of the toughness is warranted. However, I know I have contributed well to the team. I feel like my contributions are being brushed off but once I make a mistake, this manager behaves like I just destroyed the covid vaccine. It sometimes feels like I’m walking on eggshells with this manager. And sure, I’ve made mistakes but I’ve fixed them. And I’m not the only one on the team that’s been making mistakes. A few of our senior level teammates on the team have been making bad mistakes as well but they aren’t getting as much scrutiny.
