Payroll not supported for remote workers/out of state residents?

Hey,

I just had an interview where the employer said the company isn't set up to do payroll for out of state residents.

I did a little Googling and see information about multi-state payroll and nexus.

I am wondering if anyone knows more about this - why would an employer only want to hire in state for payroll reasons? I'm trying to determine if there's any wiggle room or pitch I could make while I decide if relocation makes sense.

Obviously, I'm prepared for this not to make business sense or to budge but it's the first time I've encountered it and I'd like to learn more.
