How common are jobs where you are hired by a company but still work from home?

I don't mean working remotely due to Covid. I'm wondering how common jobs where you are hired by the company, given a task and deadline, but you have the freedom to work on it whenever (as long as you get it done), then you move on to the next task, all while doing it from home. I'm not sure if this makes much sense, but for someone wanting to study while earning alongside it, I'm not sure how common such jobs are.
