How can I get started on freelance writing

so I'm a young individual living in LA and Im currently going to school for my AA in journalism. I really want to work as a freelance journalist and I have so many questions. How do I get started? Is there any online certifications I can get? What is the best way to get experience? Is an AA enough to get started and do internships or will I need to get a BA? Any recommendations on how I can build a portfolio and resume would be greatly appreciated.
