TLDR: Interviewing w/ startup, had two really good interviews, things were looking very positive, then all of a sudden I things went dark...tried reaching out once to follow up before Thanksgiving and once today, still haven't heard back. Feels like things were going so well in the interview process that the ghosting doesn't make sense.
---
So I think I've been ghosted for the first time and I'm not sure what to do (if there's anything I even can do) or if this is a somewhat common thing for a company to do...
I was interviewing with a startup (still in the 10-20 employee range) and had a really good initial interview. Within a day, the person I spoke with scheduled my next interview with a different employee. I spoke with him, and had a really good 30-45 minute conversation there as well. I was feeling great after this because I was really excited about the role and the company, and I felt so positive about things after the second interview (when the person I spoke with even said he felt I was a great fit for the role).
I followed up via email with the original contact (my first interview) and asked him to let me know what next steps were if they decided to move on. He replied later that day (in a very positive mood, even called me "awesome") and let me know that he'd be reviewing the hiring stuff shortly and that the next step would be a conversation with the CEO (once time opened up).
Needless to say I thought things were looking really good, and then for whatever reason it just all went dark. There was Thanksgiving week in between which maybe slowed things down, but it's been 3 weeks now since my second conversation and accompanying followup email, and I just haven't heard a thing back. I sent two emails (one shortly before Thanksgiving, the second today saying that I need a yes/no on if they've moved on because I have other interviews with other companies) to my initial contact and also reached out to my second interview contact to see if he knows anything about what's going on.
I've never had this happen and I'm just a bit lost as to if there is anything I can do at this point. What's so bizarre about it to me is everything felt so positive (I've interviewed a TON over the past few years, and also interviewed potential hires myself, so I have good perspective on this) and then out of nowhere it appears they've just ghosted me.
It's also weird because they said there would be a few hires for this position, so it's not just the possibility of getting beat out by one incredible candidate.
Regardless, this just seems quite unprofessional to me (even if it's a small company in startup mode) and I'd appreciate any insights or thoughts (even if it's just telling me to forget about it and move on)...I was so excited about this opportunity so obviously pretty disappointed now.
Thanks in advance!
