This a little long but I want to give some background. So I left my job a few months ago and am now searching for a new opportunity. I had been in the same roll for several years. 8 years with one company that then sold to another and I stayed there for 2 and a half years. A few months prior to my leaving I was promoted. This promotion included way more work load, high stress situations and long hours. I was becoming very unhappy as we were also short handed for about 5 months as well and I was working a very random schedule with multiple days of no lunch breaks and 11 hour days. I was told the company was going to be changing pay plans eventually but they wouldn’t say to what (typically moving to this roll would pay a lot more) My previous position I was hourly so I was paid overtime and was eligible for several bonuses. In the new position I was going to commission but they still had to redo the pay plans. So they put me on a weekly flat rate of pay. This lasted for about 3 months and without being paid overtime and losing some of the bonus opportunities of my previous roll I was making less money. They still had not figured out the new pay plans and I was getting burnt out. And frankly I felt stagnant. I had lost interest in this career path and I wasn’t learning anything new. This was as far as I could go with this roll as the the next step up would be management and that is not position that comes along very often. Returning to my previous roll wasn’t an option. My stress level and general unhappiness with my job situation was also effecting me outside of work. Friends and family were telling me I needed to get out of there. I had money saved to live off for awhile and my mom needed help with her business. So I left and have been working for my mother as well as some gig work. She has an eBay store she is quite busy with and I’ve been her only other employee. It’s taught me a lot about having a small business and I may pursue that someday but not right now. We are caught up for the most part and I am looking for full time work again. I have not added the work I am doing for her on my resume as I’m not really sure what to put it down as. She’s not a “company” and I am not sure if gig work is usually frowned upon by employers. I also don’t want employers thinking I have been doing nothing for the last 3 months. So I have some interviews lined up and the question of why I left my old job will most likely come up. I am trying to figure out the best way to explain this situation to an employer without going into this much detail lol. I am also looking for rolls in the same industry that are not the same as what I was doing for years. I want to learn new things!
TLDR. Left job a few months ago after being promoted and then making less money with more stress. I have been working for my mother and doing gig work in the mean time. How do I explain this to an employer in interviews?
