I live in Ontario, Canada, and this is my first job. I was hired exactly two years ago. I do IT work for a healthcare company. Since the pandemic began I’ve been working from home. As I am a high risk individual living with two very high risk individuals, and case numbers are still rising in my city, I have not returned to the office. From home, I’m expected to be available immediately upon request during 9AM—5PM, and to tend to business communications on weekends. Because I do not receive standby pay, I need to be available, and the amount of work that needs to be done varies a lot, it means that some days there is nothing for me to do, but I can’t take that day off, I can’t spend it at another job, and I don’t make any money—prior to the pandemic I was paid for coming in to work even if there was little to do, under the assumption that I’d then be immediately available and I was being paid to be present for whatever came up.
To begin with, I’ve done work including software engineering, IT maintenance, cybersecurity evaluation and monitoring, IT support, and even lead a project in 2019 where I migrated all of the company’s bespoke legacy systems and patient data to modern platforms, increasing work efficiency across the organization. I’ve done all of these things for minimum wage.
Am I wasting my time and effort? Am I just whining? Is this fair? As my first job, I don’t have enough knowledge to judge with confidence.
