First of all, I applied for this regional manager position for study abroad and got an email for an interview 6 days later. I scheduled it 4 work days later so I could prepare. I was super excited because I have the work ethic and experience— as well as sharing the same passions and goals as the company's mission.
The Zoom meeting options when scheduling were all 30-min blocks. When I got on my call she warned me that she had a candidate who scheduled RIGHT after me, so she HAD to cut it at 30 min. This made me disappointed because
- I need to articulate my points well and prove that I think super deeply about issues. This position is literally to oversee a bunch of students/faculty abroad and being simple and vague in answers when it comes to safety and leadership is NOT going to make me stand out. A 30-min slot forces me to not be able to really prove my knowledge.
- Because we were rushed, she barely could engage with me nor ask me follow up questions— I made sure I answered in just enough detail to prove my knowledge and passion, but I couldn't just answer in 4 sentences in less than 1 minute.
I need rapport and chemistry with the HR manager and I clearly could not get that with the pressure of time we had... I did a lot of research on signs the interview isn't going well, but TBH could you expect differently when you are given ONLY 30 min? The HR shouldn't be talking the most because I need to take up the precious time selling myself. I managed to last the entire time though.
The good thing is that they need to hire managers for 6 locations (I applied for one of them), so she is insanely busy interviewing candidates who may have applied to OTHER locations. I don't know how many applied to mine (maybe the candidate after me was applying to a different location hopefully).
She did ask me towards the end how I felt in one of their other positions that was a leadership one but with less control like the manager— I would still get to travel like the manager. I said I was flexible and was interested but I ranked that position after the manager one. I also was emphasizing that I just really want to be part of their team because the whole mission of it was aligned with my goals! Does this mean she likes me enough to consider where my qualifications best could help the company? I think they are scouting employees last minute because they want to start the program in February so it's pretty high stress at the moment getting new positions filled. She said I would get an answer within a week.
Is there hope for me?
