I am a middel school social studie's teacher & work at a an private school in an urban area. Two years ago our school was financially struggling & it got boght out by a a private company. Since then their have been a number of disturbing changes and our school is basically run like a company with the aim being to make a profit for its "CEO" (yes our principal now has to answer to this "CEO") and shareholders.
Let's start with demographics. We are an urban school and we used to be pretty diverse. We always had a high number of Asian students (about 15%) but they were largely the children of working class parents and mainly South and Southeast Asian. I myself happen to have partial Vietnamese haritage myself though I was born in the USA. We also had a sizable number of African-American and Hispanic students as one of the aims of our school was to help talented but disadvantaged students from the inner city. Honestly the former Director would like to have taken on more if possible but it just wasn't possible with our financial status.
Within just 2 short years the school is about 30% foreign-born students who come in from the suburbs. They are mainly chinese and russian kids whose family are here in white-collar jobs. This was done through a combination of factors, first a tuition hike (tuition has gone up from 5,000 a year to more than double that) & essentially pricing it out of our traditional demographic while also marketing to wealthier suburban chinese families. This and making paper testing a big component of admissions. The result is that we have gone from about 20% African-American to about 3-4%.
With the demographic change comes changes in mangement & policy's. We always believed in helping our community & that the staff & management should look more like out student body. Previously most of our teachers were qualified, licensed teachers from our local community. But last year and this year many good Black and Hispanic teachers have been let go/quit & replaced with chinese & white teachers. Many of them only got the jobs bcoz they are related to someone on the board of directors or someone who is bankrolling the school. They don't have the right licenses & especially the chinese teachers r foreign born so they don't understand Western culture and as a result they can't connect with the remaining American students.
Cheating, plagiarism and academic dishonesty among the new chinese students (to a lesser degree the russians as well) has become commonplace but we as teachers are told to ignore it (more on this later) instead we are told to emphasize more behavioral discipline (including things like dress code violations or arbitrary things like "insubordination") which disproportionately is being used to weed out our remaining Black students or students of working-class background. Overall things have also become more cut-throat and this has a disproportionate effect on the less wealthy students who can't afford expensive after-school tutoring which results in the Black and Hispanic and even white American students being given lower grades than rich chinese and white students. Of course all of this is done with the aim of making more room for noveau-riche families who can pay the ever tuition fees thus bringing in a bigger profit for the owners.
The racism has gotten out of hand. Chinese students and teachers regularly bully people of other ethnicities and nothing is done about it. Parents also complain if teachers hold personal political views that are contrary to official CCP propaganda. One teacher was dismissed for doing a lesson about the Uyghurs. (The Uyghurs are an ethnic group whose homeland, East Turkestan, is occupied by china and China has put 3 million ethnic Uyghurs in extermination camps). Another was put on suspended leave without pay because of criticizing russian interference in our elections.
As I said before cheating is rampant. Before our Black and Hispanic students would actually put in hard work to get good grades. However the rich kids r more entitled and have no regard for the rules. In one of my classes, all 16 of the students turned in the exact same essay. A lot of effort is being put into propping up fake clubs that help the chinese/white students fluff up their admissions chances but they really exist only on paper except for things like Chess, Math, Debate, Robotics, etc. because those things actually require students to go and compete and win medals. Sports shifted from basketball to tennis and lacrosse.
Behavior of these wealthy Chinese students is appalling. One of the most immediately striking things about my students was that they were loud. They had little conception of ordinary decorum or respect unless you are willing to use fear tactics. It was not unusual for five students to be screaming at me at once. It did no good to try to quiet them. I sat in on one woman’s class as she begged the children to pipe down. They just yelled louder so their voices would carry over hers. They seemed to have no conception of waiting for an appropriate time to say something. They would get ideas in their heads and simply had to shout them out.
Chinese students, especially the teenage boys, are the most directly critical people I have ever met. They readily will say things like "Black people are stupid. Mexicans are dirty." Unlike Americans, who tread gingerly around the subject of race, they can be brutally to the point. In spite of Trump's rhetoric some of them (no doubt influenced by their parents) will say things like: “We need more republicans! trump, he very good president! Stop black crime!"
Most of the chinese students I taught simply had no interest in anything except STEM or things that could be gamed. I taught America history, and students would often say they didn’t want to do an assignment or they didn’t like history because it was about america and they were chinese. The russian students were the same way. One 9th grader continually belittled America and American culture: "Russia was an empire before America was even an idea." They didn’t want to do any work in my class but I wasn't allowed to fail them because our investors didn't want them to pull out.
I once asked my students to discuss the following question: “Do you think it is okay to break the law if it will benefit you greatly?” The answer from the American students was "No. We should always follow the law." The russian & chinese students almost all answerd "Yes". As one student explained, “Get the money.” There is a level of conformity among chinese & ex-soviets other people would find hard to believe. There is no diversity of opinion.
My students were sometimes unable to see the world except through the lens of what they'd been taught in China by governmnet-approved propaganda. I had a class that was host to a German exchange student. One day he put on a Power Point presentation and the discussion soon turned to WW2. One Chinese student said Hitler was a great man because he made Germany strong. The Chinese student claimed the Jews had it coming for trying to bring down Germany. The exasperated German tried several times to explain that Hitler was in fact a very evil man. The students did not believe him and said Hitler was good for being a patriot to Germany and to the shock of my Black students said that if minorities "get in the way" they should be killed off.
All of this leaves us remaining American teachers & students frightened and we really don't know what to do.
