I was a firefighter for 2 years and made 33k starting but 41k counting overtime. I quit because 1-2x a month we had to do mandatory overtime where we had to work 2 24 hour shifts with one day off them go in again for 24 hours. Also, my lieutenant wrote me up one time because he said I didn't ask him for a drink of water at the end of a fire, he said I could not sit on the couch and I had to sit on these wooden benches the whole day, and I should I always be reading a fire book in between calls or checking out the truck. He also stated I shouldn't get on my phone and that I should tell him whatever I'm doing on phone. Also, whenever he gave reviews he said that he would never put good things on reviews because he "doesn't hand out participation trophies" and only things that state criticisms should be put on a interview because that shows what someone needs to improve on and no one reaches his high performance level, except for one sergeant that sucked up to him and got coffee for him etc.
They also had this policy where we had to wait 3 years before getting a promotion and we only got 3-5000 extra and we had to drive to get promoted, but if we wrecked the trucks they were self insured so if we were found at fault we would have to pay part of the damages out of our pocket.
I switched to IT, because it's less hard on your body, more jobs, more merocratic in regards to promotions, and it seems less subjective and usually higher pay. My first job is help desk paying 14 an hour, but over time I think it will come out to more.
However, recently I dated this lady and told her the same story, but she said that it sounded like I gave up on firefighting. And I told her how much money software engineers make, but she didn't seem all into it. She, worked as a teacher saying she made less than I did in the fire dept, so it had to have been around 30k or and she was saying careers are about doing something you love, and she went to school for history but was working as a prek instructor because she could not find a job with her degree. I was trying to tell her a career should be more about money and that you could work as a software developer making 80-120k and then work 5-8 years and retire and not have to work for these crazy bosses for life for some job you "have a passion for". Also if you do something that is a passion it becomes old. For instance, I went to school for kinesiology physical therapy and could not find any jobs in it after graduating, but she urged me to get a government job as a kinesiologist.
She also advised me to go military or firefighting, because she liked a guy in uniform and liked the firefighting shows, but I tried to tell her the actual job as a firefighter is more political/policy based and it's not as fun/hype/glamorous as the tv shows make it seem. But, she said that I gave up because I did the emt training for 8 months and went through the long hiring process. I responded that the IT certs also took a lot of work, cost $1300 total, and I had to read 1000 page books, but she didn't say anything to that. Also, a lot of girls like firefighters, soldiers, doctors etc because I think the media overhypes these professions instead of lesser known ones that make a lot more money and have more job opportunities, without spending as much money in debt.
Did I make a good choice switching to IT, and who was more right me or the girl I was dating at the time?
