I'm currently making a career change from higher ed as I begin the first semester of my MBA. The university where I am studying offers business administration internships later on down the road, so I'll definitely be taking advantage of those.
For my very first "real" job as a teen, I worked part-time at a non-profit organization and loved it. I was originally the administrative assistant but I took on many extra tasks, creating videos for members of our branch to show at regional conferences and designing materials for organizational events. However, I had already decided that I was going to be a teacher. I turned down a full-time offer at the non-profit and went on to get my Master's in Linguistics and taught English internationally before eventually returning to the US. I pursued a Ph.D. in Instructional Design for four years but left as a Ph.D. ABD due to poor retention in our department resulting in a steady loss of advisors and not enough warm bodies to serve on my board. While a Ph.D. student, I developed and taught online courses, received IRB approval and conducted research studies all on my own (again, no advisors), published on my research, presented at education seminars, and taught teach-the-teacher instructional sessions for STEM curriculum modules I had created.
On my own time, I started working independently as a consultant alongside small business owners who were enrolled in continuing education courses and wanted to build their confidence in their literacy skills. Their goal was to present themselves more professionally in their written business correspondence. During this experience, I primarily worked alongside small business owners to develop marketing materials and campaigns. For additional work, I picked up other education-related contracts, such as test-grading gigs.
With COVID, I lost most of my income as contracts were rescinded and most of my clients did not have enough extra income to spend on non-essential services. I also realized that I'm ready for a career change (or a career pivot). I enrolled in an MBA program and am really enjoying the coursework.
Of course, right now, I'm taking whatever gigs come my way and I will likely visit a career advisor once my state opens back up. But in the meantime, what are some job suggestions for someone with my scattered background plus an MBA?
