Company A: Have offer & they want response by COB Friday.
Company B: Had final interview. I explained situation & how they're my top pick. Company B says they'll have 'final discussion' and an answer by Friday.
Fast forward to 4pm Friday. Haven't heard anything. I call Company B HR recruiter:
- HR: Things changed, but we should have an answer next week.
- Me: Let me know if I'm speaking out of place, but did your team have a discussion with a clear preference for another candidate?
- HR: Um... well you're considered as a candidate with relevant skills. There were scheduling issues with meetings and we will have our final discussion next week.
- Me: Oh, you haven't had your final discussion? Sorry, I misunderstood. Look, I just wanted to be straight forward as to whether there had any major discussion hurting my odds as a competitive candidate? I only ask because I'm about to turn down another offer for a chance with this role.
- HR: *Gives detailed explanation about how other applicants scheduled interviews got knocked back & why they did. I'm only candidate who's been interviewed*
- Me: *Reiterates apology for any misunderstanding. I thank HR & confirm I'll decline Company A*
Thoughts -- Was I too pushy? Should I send a brief e-mail thanking him for his help & apologizing if I had been a bit 'forward' on the call?
