Hey everyone. So I graduated a little over a year ago with a bachelors in sociology. When I first started my path for that degree, I was a lot more optimistic about helping people. Since graduating...I still don’t have a job. I live in Cali and I’ve been struggling to find jobs. I’ve been looking at internships but I feel like I’m getting to the point where they wouldn’t hire someone like me who hasn’t been in school for as long as I have. Before graduating, I had been applying to the kinds of positions that every student applies for, cashiering and working the floor. I’ve applied for multiple jobs at Target and other retailers and have gotten so far in one position but ultimately got rejected. As I got closer to graduating I decided I wanted to shift gears a little and work towards a career in the entertainment industry, but that seemed like more of a dream. So, I started putting my focus into marketing, PR, and Social Media positions, because I strongly feel that my sociology experience is a good framework for these types of jobs. I enjoy writing and I believe I’m a strong communicator. My issue is...I lack experience. Every job I come across asks for years of experience and portfolio type samples but I don’t have any of that. My question really is, is it ever time to call it quits and maybe go back to school to get a bachelors in one of the fields I mentioned? It’s just been extremely discouraging and every time I think of what’s going on in the world with the pandemic, I think “I’ll be alright, I’m not the only one going thru this” but then again, this has been over a year, not a few months since the pandemic started. Does anyone have any advice? I hope I provided enough information. I have done quite a bit of research on even entry level jobs but I think I’m doing something wrong when not only do the more career like jobs won’t hire me but the lower customer service jobs and retail jobs won’t hire me to build that experience that companies look for.
