Writing up employees doesn’t encourage employees to improve. It encourages them to find another job.

If there’s one thing I truly despise about corporate America, it is putting anything and everything in writing.

Coworkers cc’ing your boss if they want something from you

Bosses writing you up for mistakes and cc’ing their managers or god forbid hr

I understand that some people don’t ever show up to work or will sleep on the job or really not care about their work...but I have issue with this when companies do this to people who are trying to do well but make mistakes.

Writing someone up or cc’ing them doesn’t encourage them improve. It scares the hell out of that person. Instead of getting someone to perform, you give them depression or anxiety or some other mental issues.

How can people improve? Well give people the chance to make mistakes and learn from them. Don’t punish them like they are criminals or delinquents.

Interestingly enough, this happens a lot by managers who are strong believers in meritocracy or want rockstar employees or want people who are strong believers in the mission of the company. I’ve learned now if anyone emphasizes this in an interview that this boss will be toxic to work for.
