How should I go about getting past HR for Healthcare medical assistant job?

Hi everyone,

I am a 21y.o. college student who is interested in pursuing medical school post grad. I am a senior undergraduate. Due to my college being remote/online this upcoming fall, I will have availability to now work a full time job.

I currently work as a medical/nursing unit secretary in the neonatal intensive care unit(NICU). I love seeing the babies and I like the fact that my schedule is 12 hr shifts so I only work Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and get full time. However, my job requires me to do nothing but answer the phone, pass out flowsheets, answer the doorbell to the unit and alert the nurses of visitors. So when it’s slow(which it mainly is) I’m on the phone for 12 hours or doing my homework.

This may seem like the best job for some but I want to get hands on medical experience and this medical assistant job that’s under my hospital doesn’t require a medical certification! I also meet the other qualifications. However, this is where it’s tricky. When I applied awhile back for my current position, my jobs HR/Talent acquisition department gave me that corny response that I wasn’t selected etc etc. yet I exceeded qualifications. The reason I ended up getting the job was because my advisor at school works there part time and wrote an email to the nurse manager and she asked to interview me and hired me on spot! I can’t believe HR removed my application yet the nurse manager loved me and hired me on spot.

I also couldn’t apply internally because my job requires 6 months of working to be qualified for a transfer... I will be 6 months in August (12 days). So I applied externally but I just know that the HR department will probably do the same thing even though I have the qualifications.

With this being said, I submitted the application. The office is an OBGYN practice with two doctors and I’m not sure who at the practice is required to do interviews etc. Do you have any advice on contacting them directly? I just don’t want to contact them and they are like “we have to wait for HR etc etc”. There is no email online. Only a phone and fax number. Should I call and ask to speak to someone? Should I just fax my resume and a cover letter and hope they call me back?

Sorry for this long story... lol I could really use some advice.

TLDR; College student with medical secretary job three nights a week. Bored at job and wants to apply for a direct patient care job (medical assistant) at OBGYN practice. Prior HR interaction wasn’t good because HR denied application for current role college student is in and the Nurse manager interviewed anyway based on employee referral recommendation email sent by advisor and hired on spot. Can’t apply internally because job req. 6 months in order to transfer, 6 months req. will be met in 12 days. Applied externally. Advice on how to get past HR. Call the clinic? Fax resume and cover letter to provided fax number? Advice please?
