I am currently a second year college student pre-med in California. I have thought about getting a job: For reference, I am a DACA recipient so I do not receive financial aid for college, but my mom has a sizeable business that puts us at almost 6 figures (but in the Bay Area, so still poor), with two more kids potentially headed to college.
However, my mom is completely against the idea of me working part-time because she says it'll cause my grades to slip. She says that I should look for unpaid hospital volunteer, student leadership positions regardless of pay, and to let her worry about my expenses. My expenses include in-state UC tuition, $900 per month to share a bedroom, and the occasional takeout. I do not go to raves or have a car and am extremely frugal, but the cost still adds up, especially in the Bay.
My mom says that she would put me on her payroll at her company at minimum wage for around 20hr/week (so technically pre-tax money for my expenses), and my only job would be to respond to company emails appropriately (which I already do anyways since I have native level English while my mom doesn't), and if I ever needed money for anything that comes short, such as textbooks, she would find money to cover my expenses to the best of her abilities.
On the one hand, this approach has given me the mindset to participate in activities my first year as well as earn a stellar GPA (which is important for premed). However, my mind does feel awkward that I will not have any "real" job experience by the time I graduate, even though I fully intend on going the medical school route, and to feel like a waste of money to my family throughout my undergrad.
Has anyone else been in this dilemma where parents are willing to financially support you through college through whatever means possible and actively tell you to focus on studies not work? I want to emphasize how privileged I am to be in this scenario.
