How to keep new company secret from soon to be old boss

I’m in the process of trying to leave my first job post-college after having been here about a year and a half.

Without making this a long and dramatic story, I’m not interested in sharing information about whatever new job I end up taking with my current boss due to a recent situation in which a coworker of mine found a new job, and two of our other coworkers (self-appointed managers) took it upon themselves to reach out to their new boss and 1) request that they not allow them to start on their official start date but to push it back, after the employee gave more than a month’s notice and 2) after accepting the job and working for a period of time, reach out to their new boss to tell them how horrible of an employee this person was (due to a personal vendetta, not actually job related).

I am terrified that something similar will happen to me since these coworkers seem to get a thrill out of meddling in other people’s lives and like to find “easy targets” (young, less educated, or those who refuse to get involved in petty politics)

When I first started the job my boss asked that when I get ready to leave, I give him several MONTHS’ notice so that he would have ample opportunity to find my replacement. I’m no longer comfortable with this request after seeing how other former employees have been treated.

How do I navigate this tricky situation without burning bridges?
