8 months into job (1 year contract), no real progress due to management, how do I explain this on job interviews?
I (25f) accepted a job that basically is digitalizing photo records for a library. The library has over 15,000 photos collection and has very little cataloging system. They also got a grant (where my salary comes from) that stipulates they need to put the photos for online usage.
I have a BA in history and a minor in computer information studies and this job interested me as a first real job after college.
The truth of the job has been awful. I love my boss directly over me, but the management has been horrific. The director left end of Jan and never returned due to illness. Now we are getting a new director on June 16. The "boss in charge" currently is doing everything in her power (she is normally the pay roll person), to stop this project in its tracks but this situation has been also with the former director. But outside of this job, I also have the duties of tour guide of the library, genealogist, and researcher for patron.
My job is only 25 hours a week and is severely underpaid.
I am not allowed to do any "photo of the week" with the collection on their facebook page to generate interest in the photos. I have no credentials or access to their facebook page (libraries) due to my boss is not technology capable. I have to send everything for approval and I am getting laughed at (as they do not want people to steal the photos).
I was in charge of "in house cataloging" but have no real direction on how they want to put the stuff online. The whole point of the grant. They send paperwork off Feb to get on the state website but never heard back (that they told me). So all I do is catalog what they currently have. So 50% of the grant.
I am seriously getting nervous about being in a mess come this fall due virus and economy. I am willing to work out my contract (4 more months) but am slowly wanting to move on from this role. I also am facing the reality of my direct boss's husband getting sick and she might be forced to retire over it. So I might end up totally running the room in the matter of weeks.
We are currently reopening the library due to the virus, and my room is closed to the public for all of June. Except by appointment only. So my schedule is week by week strange (this week 16 hours, next 19).
How do I explain this role to any potential interview? Its a mess and I want out.
