I’m not sure if I’ve already burned my bridges but at the very least I ruffled a lot of feathers and I’m very concerned about retaliation!
This is long so bear with me! In February I required vacation, my boss approved it and I purchased plane tickets and my location to stay the same night! 1500 dollars total towards this trip. Now between February and March I developed bronchitis and had to take PTO for the time I was off with my illness- totally fine by me. In March my boss gets furloughed and the afternoon boss takes over for the midnight shift I work. Three weeks ago she comes to me and informs me she doesn’t think she can’t approve my time off as I don’t have the PTO for the four days I requested off. I check the schedule and tell her I’m already posted For having that weekend off according to her scheduling and that I want to take the only two days of PTO I have for that time and use it for my vacation, she says she believes this will work and she WANTS to work with me so I get my time off as my tickets and place to stay would not refund. For two weeks she has promised she’ll work on the schedule and figure out how I can take my time off, which brings us to Thursday.
On the ninth she updated the schedule to show id be working during my vacation, I texted her and let her know again that I couldn’t be there as I had non refundable tickets, she said we’d discuss it when I came in the next night. We talked the next night she said she would still be working with me and that I could leave early one day to catch my flight and have those days off. I went by her word. Both our new updated schedules, the old and the new, had me listed as having Thursday off.
Thursday night i get a text from a co worker asking where I am, I tell her I have the night off because I work the weekend, she says okay and leaves it at that. I get another text from a co worker at 1am that I missed because I was sleeping, asking where I am. I told her I had the day off in the morning when I got up, she texted me that the schedule had changed and that I was supposed to come in Thursday night. I had no idea it changed. Wednesday night when I came in, she didn’t say the schedule changed, there was no mention. That same night my son was heading into the hospital but I told her I wouldn’t need to take the night off and I’d keep working- again, because of the added stress off my sons situation- not knowing to check for a very last minute schedule change.
Understandably this freaked me out! I immediately called my boss and she didn’t answer. I called her two more times in the afternoon and she didn’t respond so I texted her and asked her to call me so we could go over the mix up. She responded I could call her when she got to work, I should have checked the schedule, and she already emailed Hr About marking me as a no call no show and was waiting for their response. I gave her the benefit of the doubt thinking she may have emailed them to let them know it was a mix up because she changed the schedule at the last minute- I was incredibly wrong. I called her when she got in and she told me I should have checked the schedule for updates and that she wasn’t required to inform me she changed it, i should have checked. I asked why she didn’t call me as I had no missed calls or messages from her, she said she called the number on my contacts and a man answered and told her she had the wrong number. I asked what number she called and she rattled it off and it wasn’t a number listed ANYWHERE on my contact information. She told me she wasn’t even technically required to give me a call, but that she followed policy by calling the number I gave. I insisted again it wasn’t my contact info- she has my cell number, I’ve texted and called her from it multiple times. She then informed me I was getting hit as a no call no show, I’d be getting a write up, points, and she was not approving my vacation as I no longer had the PTO to use because I didn’t show on Thursday. I stayed very calm, asked her for a recap of our conversation and she refused to send one. I asked for HR’s contact info, she gave it to me, and I told her I’d see her when I worked next.
I immediately wrote out an email to HR about this, and sent her an email to recap our conversation. I’m just wondering, do I have a leg to stand on to get this write up and points thrown out? At this point it’s not even about the vacation, it’s about the blatant fabrication of information and how this was handled. I’m also worried about retaliation for going to HR! How would you guys deal with this? Do you see this working in my favor?
