Linkedin vs email

I want to network with my school’s alumni to learn more about their company. What’s the best approach for connecting with them? If I can find their email by guessing, is it better to email them? Or should I use LinkedIn? If using LinkedIn, is it better to connect with a message first or message first? Thanks in advance!
